I decided to use it for the post card for my upcoming solo exhibit at Lost Acres Vineyard in North Granby CT. I am so excited about this show. It's been a little over a year in the making. I've been hoarding paintings all year to create this body of work.

Last year I had a two man show with Caleb Stone which was a great experience. For that exhibition I really began broadening my vocabulary in terms of painting the landscape. The pieces I exhibited were small but honest. I took those works and over the last year I've creatively exploded.

I think my greatest accomplishment over the last year was improving my sense of composition. I owe a lot of this to a group of guys on Instagram who have provided me with some great feedback. Jon Hayes, Brian Martin and the legendary Donald Jurney have really expanded my concept of composition and how to approach a painting. Except for Jon who doesn't live in New England we all now get together once in a while and spend the day painting along with some other great artists who we've all connected with via Instagram. It's really been a cool thing.

Ok enough about Instagram and some of the friends I've made through there. Here's the finished piece as a promo card for my show. This painting is titled "Eastward Morning" and is a 40x30 oil on canvas. This piece was created from some sketches I did on a cool summer morning somewhere around North Cornwall here in CT.
Well now I've pretty much got myself on lockdown as I try to put together all of those studies and produce a body of work that I'm proud of. So far I've been really excited bringing all of these paintings to life but I can't help but be nervous of that deadline soon approaching.

Unlike last years two man show with Caleb Stone where I exhibited very small works this show is going to be BIG. I have a huge space to fill and tons of stuff I want to paint. I've been pushing myself all year to find new subject matter, challenge myself with new palettes, and the scale of these pieces and amount of which I have painted has got me so excited. For now I'll leave you with what's currently on my easel in the garage. (Yeah I paint in the garage, you can laugh, it's not fancy but it serves it's purpose. :)
Oil Painters of AmericaI'm excited to announce that this portrait I painted of Kerri will be included in the Oil Painters of America's Eastern Regional exhibition. The show opens on September 12th at the Eisele Gallery of Fine Art in Cincinnati Ohio. This is the 3rd painting I've done of Kerri and I believe it's the most successful one I've done of her.

I've been inspired by the work of Steven Assael for some time now and one of the many things I love about his work is what he does with light and color. This painting is my second attempt at using a colored light bulb in a portrait. I think the colored light really adds another level to the piece. I lit Kerri with a 5K light bulb over head and had a red 60w shining in from the side. I'm going to continue exploring with this some more as I find it very challenging to try and get that strong color and light to work on the face.

Here's the painting. It measures 16x10 and is oil on panel.
As a result I get to go to the portrait convention this year and check out all the awesome demos. I know I'm going to be like a little fan boy running around taking pictures of all the artists there whose work I admire. I'll post some pics from the show and workshop when I get back!
I'm excited to announce that I will be having a two-man show with the great Caleb Stone at the Gallery at the Mill House in Chester CT coming up in September. This will be my first show since we had our son, Paulie, last year. Wow does time fly when you have a baby! Anyway I still have a lot of work to do before everything is ready but I did want to post a sneak peak at one of the pieces that I will be including in the show.

I'm just about to bite the bullet and call this one done. I've been messing with this thing on and off since last fall and I believe its about as good as I can get it.... for now. I started this portriat after first hearing about the "Zorn Palette" on Facebook. (Yes I only recently heard about this thing.) After using a palette consisting of white, ochre, red, and black I can't believe I hadn't heard of this earlier. I believe this is how everyone should learn how to mix flesh tones, especially for anyone just starting out. I've been focusing on working with a limited palette for a few years now and I have to say I found this palette great to work with. Like a lot of artists my medium of choice was a pencil, pretty much because that a pencil and paper is cheap and that's what was available. It wasn't until I got to college that I learned that there were harder and softer pencils that could offer varying degrees of darkness, and oh there's also this stuff called charcoal....ok so I've come a long way in that respect. However once I discovered oil paint I spent years destroying decent drawings with bad painting. I just didn't have the knowledge and vocabulary with color and paint application as I did with a pencil. I still think I can pump out a more refined drawing than I can paint but hey that's just part of what keeps me trying to constantly improve.

This is a 16x20 Oil on Canvas, I'm just calling it Kerri for now.
I did a little 18x24 winter scene using a photo reference I took earlier that morning behind an industrial area here in town. I'm a firm believer that you don't have to go far to find beauty in nature. I did rework the piece in the studio and the last pic is the finished painting. I want to thank the Hamden Art League for having me, they have a great group of people and I enjoyed meeting so many new people. My next demo will be in Newtown on March 13, for more information go to http://www.scanart.org/demonstrations.htm.
This is a recent drawing I did. I'm just started work on a portrait of the same model. Different pose however. I may paint this image as well but if I do I think I'll try and really down play the shadow side of the face.Paul Batchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18082943051344040739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2134426240642867402.post-53968084427412454182012-10-10T04:12:00.000-07:002012-10-10T04:12:13.371-07:00Winter Palette

I did this painting on a palette for the Florence Griswold Museum's Christmas tree. I was honored to be asked to be a part of this since I admire so many of the other artists that have contributed to this tree in the past.

One is the first pass through this painting. The second is the final piece. In between there were about 4 or 5 passes where I tried to refine the drawn elements a bit, pushed the tonal structure, paint application and obviously the color. Feel free to let me know what ya think.

This is a recent painting I completed earlier this year. I was hoping I could include it in a figurative show I'm participating in with a couple of other artists here in Connecticut. This painting unfortunately could not be displayed as it was "too nude". It's 48x60 and is pretty confrontational but really? C'mon, I've seen stuff like this and worse in museums and art history books. I also had to take this painting down early from my grad show for the same reason. Assuming it's not a horrible painting, I'm kind of taking this response as a compliment. However I'd like to be able to display it somewhere other than the storage facility where it currently resides.Paul Batchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18082943051344040739noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2134426240642867402.post-11966817567991178552012-05-31T16:23:00.000-07:002012-05-31T16:23:03.183-07:00Pushing PortraitsIm trying to improve my work with the figure and portraits. I've been entering them in juried shows in the area trying to get some feedback on them. This one will be at the Vernon Arts Center's show. For more info on the show go to www.vernonarts.org and I'd appreciate any feedback on this piece.
When I arrived at art school most of my previous knowledge of art was from comic books and what little art history I paid attention to in high school. (My high school art teacher was fantastic, but that's for another time.) I also saw illustration as a path towards a tangible career. Like most young students I was kind of lost. At the same time I really wasn't getting the kind of education I desired. To the schools defense I wasn't as committed a student as I should have been. I spent more time rolling joints than I did stretching canvases... live and learn.

Back to Stephen.

At a faculty exhibit (Hartford Art School) I saw this small self portrait, that from across the room, was able to hit me straight in my gut. I believe this was my first genuine experience with the power of painting. I had never experienced such a visceral reaction from a picture hanging on a wall in my life. Yes the portrait was well executed and looked very "real" but for all it's great technical accomplishments what got me was just how "human" it felt. Here was this paining of an older guy who I had never met but suddenly I felt this deep shared connection with. This man was obviously an accomplished painter yet his portrait contained all of the vulnerability, the searching, and tension that I was (and still am) experiencing. I went and met with Stephen shortly after and have loved both him and his work ever since. I've committed myself to painting ever since.

Through practice, you and I can learn how to paint a convincing portrait, put the eyes and nose where they belong and figure out a decent formula for achieving flesh tones; but to paint with that much integrity, to expose ourselves, to be so brutally honest is really something else, and that something else can be quite powerful.

These are some examples of Stephen's portraits.
